I am quietly hyperventilating over here in my corner but I wanted to let y’all know:

Here is the story ABC has posted about the “Is It Okay to be Fat?” Nightline Face-off.

*continues to hyperventilate*

And here is a lot of debate footage.

The show airs tonight (we got bumped back by Tiger Woods). I look forward to hearing what y’all think

I think respect is a good jumping off point, especially when we’re trying to win over viewers who aren’t sure whether our cause has any merit. Toning down the sarcasm will help FA become mainstream, which will help millions of women and girls. Isn’t that the purpose of this whole endeavor?

I just wanted to say congratulations. I’m about halfway through the debate right now, but I had to take a break to say “Brava!”

Amazing that (thus far) no one has taken up your point about the mental / emotional impact of the self-loathing caused by rhetoric like Meme Roth’s. Kind of proves what you’re saying about the impact of obesity-think on fat people, right? It seems to barely register on anyone except Crystal Renn and some members of the audience.

    Plus: purple tights! Awesome sauce.

Marianne, you did a great job. Rational, calm, unflappable. Very eloquent when asking why Roth doesn’t advocate doing things for our health instead of framing every societal ill on the evil fatties.

My fantasy is getting onto an (AirTran, because they’re not fat-phobic so far) airplane next to MeMe Roth so I can squish over into her seat and struggle with my seatbelt and grunt and ask for an extra meal. I’d eat it, too. Then I’d look at her tray and ask, “You gonna finish that?”

I found you through that debate and then a link from Shapely Prose.

Good job, both in articulating your ideas and not murdering MeMe Roth.

Also, I’m in love with your hair. I have never seen an unnatural colour done so well.

    You were fantastic! Great job.

Astonishing, isn’t it, how deeply ingrained the societal fat-hatred is. Self-haters like Meme can’t even conceive of a different way to think about the issue–or a mindframe where it isn’t an issue.

[...] Marianne Kirby is also on the show tonight. I teach an evening class, so I will unfortunately miss it. But my DVR will be ready to go. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments. Go, team! Posted by mo pie [...]
