So, obviously I am avoiding the big serious entries this week. Even FA activists sometimes take a little time to gear up to be all personally revealing and whatnot!
In the meantime, I know many people are recoiling in horror from a large part of Beth Ditto’s new line at Evans but….
I love it.
There, I admit it.
I am jonsing for that domino print dress seriously hard.
Which is pretty much the only justification I have for this post title. *laugh*
And you know? I think this is perfectly on trend with the other stuff I’m seeing coming out in straight sizes. The kitty face t-shirt is, as much as it reeks of the 80s, kind of intriguing to me because of the creepy rhinestone eyes and, you know, if everyone else gets the chance to make questionable fashion choices, well, I appreciate having that opportunity myself.
Maybe it’s because I didn’t really get to do the 80s the first time around? I don’t know. But I love it. I love the weird acid wash jean skirt and the stain glass prom dress though I question whether or not it has room for my boobs. And I am seriously, seriously in love with the cropped black biker jacket.
Which, actually, if we want to talk about outfit building, I’d wear with a black men’s t-shirt and the denim pencil skirt, acid-wash and all.
I’m pretty comfortable with the idea that true fashion equality means that fat people can dress in ludicrous trendy clothes, too. *grin*

I just bought the biker jacket. It is sooooo cute, (though waxed cotton, not leather sadly. Still shiny mind). Am planning on wearing it with my black chiffon prom dress and big stompy boots.
It being cotton is actually a good thing for me – it is way too hot for leather here, generally speaking. *grin*
And I love the idea of it with stiompy boots and a prom dress – I am a fan of that look in general.
The purple sequin top is intriguing me, too.
Oh! How are you finding the sizing – do you think it matches up with the measurement given on the site?
It’s pretty true to the usual Evans sizing. The size 22 jacket fits sizee 22 like a dream – it’s lined, by the way, with dominoe fabric, which is a nice touch. The only thing that concerns me about it is that you don’t appear to be able to wash or dry clean it, just sponge it down now and again. I guess maybe the glazing effect would be lost. At 5′ 3″ I found the size 20 leggings, (my usual Evans size for leggings), about an inch and a half too long and very slightly loose in the thigh. I tried the geo print prom dress on and found myself between a 22 and a 24, which tends to be my lot in Evans tops and dresses. However it definitely wasn’t the right shape for me from the waist down. It hit me just above the knee. It isn’t flared like it looks in the picture on the website – it’s sort of more pencil skirt-ish and it’s made of thick fabric with a bit of stretch in it – but it kind of had a ready-made arse-shape built into it – and my arse is as flat as a board. It was a pisser because the dress itself is really cute and I thought it was reasonably well made too.
I chatted with the staff there and they said the collection was originally much bigger but that Evans were holding on to the rest of it to release at Christmas. Also Beth’s contracted to do another collection with them for next year. I am soooo excited about this. Not because I think I’m going to wearing much of it – a lot of it’s too young and way too clingy for moi, but because I’m really hoping it’ll be a huge enough success that other high street manufacturers take notice and start to wise up to the Power of the Portly Pound. (Hmmm I feel a new blog coming on…)
I kind of like it too. Am contemplating making a journey to the local Evil Shopping Centre to try it all on, giggle at myself and then put it back.
I’m a bit more conservative in my clothes, usually. But I still think it’s fun.
I was gonna rant about how I loathe the 80s fashion trend and the only thing I like are the leggings under skirts/dresses; but now I just say THANK YOU for pointing me to a plus-sized UK store!! OMG! They deliver to Europe mainland without a ridiculous cost!! (Ordering from US stores usually costs me around 30 to 40 euros extra. Yeahhhh….. no.)
Okay, setting aside my knee-jerk hatred of the catface Big Tee (which I just can’t dig, on any level), I actually really like the denim pencil skirt a whole lot, and am seriously considering shelling out for the purple hoodie. I’m not enamored of the whole retro ’80s trend in general, but I can totally see that, if someone *did* like that trend, there would be stuff to like in this collection.
I *need* the domino dress and matching leggings. It’s not a “want”, it’s a “need”.
i swing more boho than edgy, so this is not for me. also am an old-skool believer in “if you wore it the first time…” and HOO BOY did i wear it the first time, the actual 80s. dayum, i looked like a thompson twin. but for the dewy youthful fashion-obsessed girls, i love this, and it seems so on-trend with What They’re Showing for the skinny hipsters. i hope it sells.
Oh…I want that stained glass dress. So cute!
Most of the collection is not my personal style at all (I swing far more to the Stevie Nicks/Renfairy end of things), but I have to say that I’m in love with the domino dress. What’s more, what I’ve seen looks fun and festive for those who dig the 80’s look.
The one thing I would love to see is more bold color. I’m tired of plus sizes always being made in ’slimming’ black and ‘ladylike’ grayed out pastels. Beth, maybe next time you could work in a couple more purple or red or orange or acid green things for us?
Some people look spectacular in black, but I look my best in bright, saturated colors, and I’d like to be able to find more of them in sizes I can wear.
Like most collections, I don’t love everything, but the biker jacket and the denim pencil skirt make me want to drop everything and go to the UK to try them on
.
I want to wear that jacket with a tank top or shell, a pair of dead conservative black pants, and plain black pumps or the dressy sandals that have some metal on them that I have. But I’m not 100% sure about how the length would look on me (I’m short waisted).
Oh no Beth Ditto.
I really wanted to like some stuff in her collection. But I already did 1984, when I was 11.
Now, this is interesting. Because normally, I have a big DIY thing going on, and I buy most of my stuff in thrift stores and play around with altering it, and I avoid the high street chains with a vengeance…but dammit, I’m wanting those domino leggings. Not sure about the rest, but I have a skirt I’m thinking they’d look cool under. Plus, they would FIT, which is never a foregone conclusion with me and leggings even if they’re supposed to be my size. And I’m not sure if this means Beth has sold out, but bless her, I don’t think I care.
I have a lovely friend in the UK bringing me the domino dress in October. Can’t wait.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE the domino dress. I think it’s fantastic. You could wear it with your shiny purple leggings and I would jump up and down squeeing with joy for how awesome you were.
I may buy one myself, though I am broke as a broke thing right at this moment. STILL.
I already did 1984, when I was 11.
Heh. Some of us did it when we were 18.
It’s really interesting seeing “hipster” clothes coming out for plus sizes. I posted a photo of myself in these ludicrously huge fake eye glasses the other week on tumblr, and someone commented that I was just hipster trash. And for me, it was kind of crazy, because I equate hipster culture with painfully thin people wearing skinny jeans etc, but at the end of the day, I employ lots of “hipster” avant garde ideas in the way I style myself too. If that makes me a fat hipster, that’s ok.
I just like that I get to participate in all the post-modern jabs at popular culture, even if I have a fat body!
Those domino leggings and studded bag have my name on it.
I like 80s – I generally dress like an extra in a Salt n Pepa video clip most days, so this shiz is right up my alley.
aw, the domino dress is sold out in my size :< It sold out so fast!
I see that biker jacket going with every single thing in that collection.
I am not in the Cult of the Domino Dress, though. I’d rather have the purple sequin tunic. Picture it with leggings for day, and wide leg trousers for evening.
I like the stained glass prom dress, but I have no practical reason to own it…not that I have a practical reason to own the purple sequin tunic either.
I grabbed my stuff seriously within hours after it came out. I got the belt, the purple hooded top and the crazy awesome biker jacket. It doesn’t surprise me that the belt is already sold out since it’s the most everyday type thing they had. I wanted to get the purse too, but I’m not made of money…
I’m dying to see how things fit when they come in the mail. I’m a US size 24 and their chart said size 28 in their stuff. I’m hoping it fits me well.
I am totally geeking over that stain glass prom glass.
Totally.
Ok. I want that big cat shirt so badly it’s not funny. I would totally wear that thing. 80’s, 70’s, whatever, I loves me that kitty shirt. You can have your leggins and domino dresses, but I wants that shirt
Only, I’m not sure how dollars translate into pounds. Hrm.
Suzan,
A British pound is worth roughly $1.60 at the moment.
I just bought the stained glass prom dress online (I’m moving house and won’t be able to get to the shops for a while). I hope it’s as pretty as it looks – I need an outfit for my friend’s wedding in September!
It’s 4:34 AM, I’m awake. But I just saw this and I have to say.
Purple. Sequin. Top. =-O
The title of your post makes me want to buy the domino dress and then run around in it singing Rancid’s “Dominoes Fall”
…hey ho let the bombs blow let the dominoes fall I ain’t got control…
