I am not a huge fan of Tim Gunn (he takes snobby elitism to new heights), but he is no dummy.
“Perhaps you like to torture yourself by trying on some jeans from a few years ago to see if you can button them. Clothes do not exist to humiliate their owners. Please do not force garments into performing psychological tasks for which they were not designed.”

Heh. I actually think Gunn is fairer than he sounds. I saw an episode of his show where the featured guest was a very soft-spoken parole officer. Gunn’s partner scoffed at the idea of such a sweet woman being a parole officer, and he was all, “If I committed a hideous crime, she is exactly the kind of person I’d want to handle my case.” It was cute.
I love the Gunn! I think he is wonderful, and this little gem is one more reason for me to love him.
” . . . performing psychological tasks for which they were not designed.”
I just had a mental picture of my bluejeans from college sitting in an office chair saying, “so tell me why you hate your lower half so much.”
Priceless. Thank you – because sometimes it takes other people to show me how insane I am. So really – thanks.
That’s fabulous. God bless Tim Gunn!
I had a chance to meet Tim Gunn last year and this statement from him does not surprise me at all. Despite his buttoned down look and perpetual pin-striped suit, he’s a genuinely nice, down to earth person who was very easy to work with and incredibly accomodating. He stayed at a book festival longer than he was scheduled to because there were so many people lined up to meet him and he didn’t want to disappoint them. After dealing with some diva authors that year (Tina Louise I’m talking about you), Tim Gunn was a treat.
Just because Tim Gunn speaks the way he does doesn’t mean he’s a snobby elitist. I’ve always found him incredibly honest, down to earth and open to all kinds of people and experiences; he just uses words most people don’t hear very often. He says realistic, well thought-out things like that all the time. Why so surprised?
*eyeroll* I don’t think Tim Gunn is a snobby elitist because of his vocabulary. That is an assumption on your part, Liza, that is completely out of left field.
I think Tim Gunn is a snobby elitist because every time I’ve seen him on anything he has acted like a disapproving, snobby elitist. I’m not saying he should die in a fire, just that I am not a huge fan. There are plenty of people of whom I am not a huge fan and their vocabulary generally has nothing to do with it – actually, a good vocabulary usually predisposes me to like a person.
Weightless One, that is really awesome to hear. I’m glad to read that he is so considerate of his fans – you’re right, way too many authors would have bailed long before he did.
TR- You think he’s a snobby elitist because he acts like a snobby elitist? I have to say I don’t care about Tim Gunn much either way, but you might want to give your reader some examples of behavior. Otherwise your criticism seems out of left field.
Except, Chiken, I’m not interested in the slightest in getting into a big analysis of Tim Gunn’s presentation. He reads that way to me and that is okay. He doesn’t to other people which is also okay. In fact, I’m glad to hear from other people that he has been nothing but peaches and cream sweet in person! I truly do think that is great.
But, honestly? None of that has anything to do with the point of the post, which is what he had to say about clothes, which I heartily support and agree with.
