Today is pot roast and mashed potatoes in the cafeteria at work. I was apparently visibly excited about this as the cafeteria dude commented on it. Not in a snide way – just in a “pleased to serve you this pot roast and mashed potatoes because you are so happy about it” kind of way.
And it hit me – I AM EXCITED ABOUT FOOD.
In a really simple, “food is good” kind of way.
Yay, food! I want to celebrate eating being an actual pleasure. And so I’m eating my pot roast and enjoying it very much.

Yay!! That makes me happy! Personally, there’s very little in my life that can’t be made better with some fluffy mashed potatoes.
Food is totally awesome. I’ve been introduce my friends to the idea of fat acceptance and my decision to stop diety by saying, “I’m really into eating food these days.”
Today I’m having pumpkin soup from Au Bon Pain. So so delicious.
I don’t think I’ve ever had pot roast! It sounds good though. I’m just starting the not-nauseous-all-the-time stage of being knocked up, though, so EVERYTHING sounds good.
My husband and I cooked Thanksgiving dinner for 20 people last week, and I had my hands full trying to peaceably but effectively head off everyone’s talk of how ‘bad’ they were being with their second slices of pie, and how they would pay for it later. We were surrounded by piles of awesome food, and I wanted to just plain ENJOY it, dammit!
Argh. Nothing makes me wanna undigest a lovely meal more than hearing women talk about how “sinful” they’re being, or how much more time they’ll have to spend on a treadmill, if they have that second helping.
Fall foods are so pretty and luxurious. I just made a cider pie and intend to have two pieces. With real whipped cream.
Pot roast was one of my childhood favorites, right up there with my mom’s corned beef. I make a vegetarian pot roast version now, but it still doesn’t have the texture or flavor of the meat-based recipe.
Echo that Eden. My husband’s sister-in-law, the one who is constanty counting points and buys those wildly expensive pre-portioned snacks by the box load, does this constantly at family meals. I want to just shake her sometimes. Luckily, my own side of the family are very much the food connoisseurs and avoid this kind of talk.
I almost made pot roast the other night, but went for beef stew instead. Now I want some, darn it.
The guilt and baggage associated with food have turned me off for a really long time. Being excited about this pot roast felt really good – because it really was a simple anticipation of fulfilling an appetite. It wasn’t about eating as much pot roast as possible because there might never be pot roast again and it wasn’t about NOT eating the pot roast because there is a salad bar. Just enjoyment of the food that I had in front of me.
Good times.
Kate, you should totally make pot roast tonight.
The husband *snicker* and I are going to attempt bread pudding. We had some in New Orleans and it was AWESOME so we’re giving it a go here at home.
Now, THERE’s a great idea. I have not thought about making pot roast for ages. Oh, and I don’t serve it with mashed potatoes – I roast mine. Sorry.
But I was looking for an idea for a “pot luck” at my DH’s work this weekend – and was really not feeling the love about doing something with fish…but POT ROAST….mmmmm. yes. Great idea. I’m all over that.
Roast potatoes would be equally lovely!
I love a good roast (pork or beef) done in the oven with potatoes, carrots, onions, and bell peppers. Cook it on 350 for about 3 hours, YUMMY!
Food is definitely good. I’m helping one of my best friends plan a dinner party for her birthday this weekend. We’re so excited about it. We also with other friends went apple picking last weekend so lots of yummy apple desserts are on the way!
I also want pot roast now. With some roasted potatoes and carrots mashed together with a fork. mmm…reminds me of childhood.

I might need to make that with my pot roast, too.
And it should be super-easy, btw. I’ve never made bread pudding proper, but I’ve made many a successful savory strata, and as far as I know, it’s exactly the same process. If I can’t mess it up, nobody can.
I love a good pot roast and for years tried to duplicate my Grandma Florence’s pot roast. I finally figured out that the trick was to use a proper enameled roasting pan with cover like she did. My pot roasts started turning out as delish as her’s were.
I picked up a nice sized chuck o’beef this last weekend, locally grown and butchered, so am looking at a slow cooked roast with plenty of Yorkshire pudding on the side this Sunday. MMMMMMMMMM!
We have a slow cooker that I’m practically married to, makes the most awesome pot roast on earth! The only bad part is having to sit tight for 8 hours while the smell of the roast drives you up a wall.
I’m not a real “yay food” person myself. I like some foods but eating really isn’t pleasurable for me in the day to day sense. I’d probably be very sad if I couldn’t have another piece of sushi or bite of wonderful pot roast ever again, but I wouldn’t miss eating in general if I didn’t have to do it. I’m not sure if that’s just me being weird or if it has to do with the miserable quality of most of the food I can afford to cook.
I get seriously excited when the vending mechine guy puts the cream cheese muffin in the food mechine on Tuesday… he only puts one in, ( I don’t think I’ll every understand the true reason why.) I revel in being the person to get it, it makes my Tuesday’s (well, the ones when I get to the CCM first.) very special. I’m pretty vocal about it… I get some strange looks, but mostly people accept my food excitement. Sometimes people even buy it for me!
Oh my gosh THANKSGIVING DINNER! Now I’m thinking about it! Yeah for food is right! All food! I am totally obsessed with Fugi apples, mini Hershey Halloween bars, and olives right now! Weird.

Yorkshire pudding. Mmmmmmmm. You take the roast out of the pain (and vegetables if there are any) and in the pan drippings you pour about two cups (for a 9×13 pan) of this thin batter (eggs, (butter)milk, flour, and salt) — sort of a cross between crepe batter and popover batter — and put it back in the oven. Pretty soon you have this undulating puffy bread product with little bits of pot roast and vegetables in it.
Sounds almost as good as the leftover Shepherd’s Pie I had for lunch.
